The Challenge

Hobsons Bay City Council, located in Melbourne’s western suburbs, manages an extensive portfolio of over 300 sites, including 15 large market sites and 174 small market sites. Facing escalating energy costs, the council sought a professional energy partner to help navigate their complex needs.

Although they had worked with an energy broker previously, the scope and scale of their energy portfolio required a more comprehensive and resourceful approach. Additionally, the council wanted to transition toward more sustainable energy practices and innovative solutions like Virtual Energy Networks (VEN).

A clear timeline was established: the project would commence in the first week of August, with an ambitious goal to complete all work by early September.

Virtual Energy Network (VEN)

    An innovative system that enables organisations to sell excess solar power directly within a network rather than back to the grid. This approach allows for greater profitability and fosters a collaborative energy-sharing model across the council's sites.

    Exclusive Products and Expertise

    Leveraging Choice Energy’s expertise, the council transitioned to a bespoke solution tailored to their needs. This included collaboration with Momentum Energy and Innovest to implement the VEN and optimize energy procurement.

    Accelerated Turnaround

    Despite the scope and complexity of the project, Choice Energy completed all work within just four weeks, ahead of the original timeline. This allowed the council to start achieving energy savings by early September.

    The Results

    Cost Savings: $60,000 in energy savings were identified across the council’s smaller sites, with additional savings anticipated from the VEN implementation.

      Innovative Energy Solutions: The Council now has its Virtual Energy Network fully operational, trading energy from sites with excess generation to the community HUBs, Libraries, and Community Centres, further reducing the total energy bill by $ $80,000 per year.
